Anthony (Bud) Rock first joined ASU as a special adviser to ASU President Michael Crow for strategic international initiatives. Now as vice president for global engagement, Rock will emphasize three essential themes in the work of the office: knowledge acquisition, research and strategic engagement.

As a former senior U.S. Department of State official, Rock brings to ASU a wealth of experience from diplomatic assignments abroad and in Washington, D.C., most recently as acting assistant secretary of state responsible for science, technology, environment and health affairs. Among his many accomplishments, Rock led the successful negotiation of three major agreements for expanded trade in the Middle East, and he represented the United States in the first comprehensive dialogue with the European Union on trade in bioengineered products.

Before joining the Foreign Service, Rock was employed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – first as a physical scientist, and ultimately as coordinator for international research. He also held the position of international director of the National Sea Grant Program.
