Ambassadors of Peace

High school exchange students from the Middle East here on scholarship as Ambassadors of Peace through AYUSA Global Youth Exchange is interested in presenting information regarding their viewpoints on peace from their country’s perspective during International Education Week (November 17th-21st).  If you or your organization is interested in inviting these students to present at a meeting, in a class, etc., please contact Mollie Kidari at mollie1119@aol.com or 602.435.4321.

Volunteer Opportunity at Camp Darfur - West Campus

The Office of Student Engagement at ASU – West Campus is excited to present Camp Darfur on Wednesday, November 18th and Thursday, November 19th as part of Four Realms of Discovery programming. Camp Darfur is an interactive awareness and education event that brings attention to the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan and gives individuals the opportunity to discover their own power to make a difference.  The event will take place on Fletcher Lawn from 10am-6pm daily.   Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, event management, and tear down.  6-8 volunteers are needed per shift, which is 2-3 hours in length.  Please visit http://campdarfur.eventbrite.com  to sign up for a shift.  Please note that the website refers to “Remaining Tickets,” which actually indicates the number of volunteer shifts available.  For more information or questions, please contact Student Engagement at 602.543.8200 or campdarfur@asu.edu.

Coalition of International Students Presents 6th Annual International Night!

The Coalition of International Students (CIS) is hosting International Night on Saturday, November 21st at 6.30pm on Hayden lawn.  It is a night where several international students and student organizations come together to highlight the diversity of cultures through song, dance, food, cultural displays, and more!  Everybody is invited, so come join this fun and entertaining event!!  Check out their website here!  For event information or question contact Fabian Lenero at Flenero@asu.edu.

Volunteers Needed for International Night

The Coalition of International Students (CIS) is hosting its 6th annual International Night and are in tremendous need of your help as a volunteer! The event will be held on Hayden Lawn on Saturday, November 21st.  Volunteers are needed anytime from 10am-11pm (with set-up, the show, and clean-up).  What will you get in return?  You can have CIS sign your volunteer sheet for community service hours, you get one of our awesome International Night t-shirts, and you get to experience the thrill of putting together an event that draws 500 people as well as watch the talented performances!  You also can put it on your resume as experience in helping coordinate an event on campus!  If you're interested, please email cis.asu2002@gmail.com. Community Clean Up

Do you need community service hours? Are you looking for a good club activity? Grab your club members and join us for this 2nd Annual event!  The 2nd Annual Community Clean Up will take place on Saturday, November 21st from 9-11am.  Join ASU Fraternity & Sorority Life, Canon Leadership Program, Obama Scholars, Council of Religious Advisors, and Off-Campus Commuter & Student Services in giving back to the City of Tempe.  The event will take place at Evelyn Hallman Park at McKellips Rd. & College Ave.  Transportation will be provided for students who need it!  Visit http://hallmancleanup.eventbrite.com to register!

Thanksgiving Dinner for ASU Faculty and Students

The Fellowship of Faith and Cultures Club of ASU (co-sponsored by the Foundation of Inter-Cultural Dialogue) is organizing a Thanksgiving dinner for ASU faculty and students on Monday, November 23rd.  The dinner entitled, “Expressing Gratitude for Diversity,” will be held at the Turkish Cultural Center at 2330 W University Dr., Suite 5, Tempe at 6.30pm.  If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by November 15th to stopal@asu.edu .  To find out more information, please go here.   This event is free of charge.

An American Thanksgiving Experience for International Students

Thanksgiving this year is on Thursday, November 26th. Traditionally, Americans celebrate by gathering together with family members to eat a big turkey dinner. There are many families who would like to invite one or more international students to enjoy this family time with them. If you would like to experience this holiday with an American family, you may sign up by emailing International Students Club at thanksgivingasu2009@hotmail.com

 6 - Food restrictions you have (most families will serve turkey with any side dishes, but others vary that menu)

 7 - Need for transportation if you have any

 8 - Name and email address of a friend wanting to accompany you, if any 9 – If you are single, or if you will bring your spouse and any children Deadline for sign up is Monday, November 16th.

 

The host family will contact you a few days before Thanksgiving to invite you and arrange transportation.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Off-Campus Commuter & Student Services

Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services (OCCSS), in partnership with the ASU Parents Association, invites you to enjoy a free Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, November 26th at either 11am-1pm or 1-3pm at the OCCSS building.  The building is located at 915 S. Rural Rd.  Please RSVP by contacting OCCSS at 480.965.2940 by Tuesday, November 24th.

Devil’s Detour!

Devi’s Detour is part of a new international programming series is brought to you by the Student Organization Resource Center and Center for Global Education Services and made possible by the Priscilla Richards Endowment.  The program consists of one field trip off-campus and one on-campus and is geared toward international students who are interested in experiencing American and ASU culture.   This semester, the off-campus excursion will take place on Saturday, November 28th.  We will be going to Superstition Farm in Mesa, where students will learn about farm life, take a hayride around the farm, and sample 12 different flavors of milk from the milk bar.  Transportation will be provided.  Please note that this excursion will be reserved to the first 50 students, and a $5 security deposit will be collected.  You will have your $5 returned to you on the day of the event.  Spots are filling up quick, so please be sure to reserve your place! The on-campus portion of Devil’s Detour will take place Friday, December 4th, where we will go as a group to support ASU’s women’s basketball team as they take on Idaho State.   This event will be free to all.   If you are interested in participating in either of these events, please e-mail ayumi.kunihiro@asu.edu.

Club Carnival 2010

Club Carnival 2010 is quickly approaching!  Club Carnival is an event for student organizations to introduce themselves to the student body and offer opportunities for them to become involved with the campus community.  There will be music, food vendors, entertainment, and more!  This year, the event will take place on Hayden Lawn on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 from 11-2pm.   If your student organization is interested in participating in this spring's Club Carnival, please fill out and submit an application form NO LATER THAN 9AM ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 22ND, 2010.  By participating, your organization will also automatically be entered into a raffle to win some great prizes!  You may register through OrgSync: Tools: Forms: Tempe: Club Carnival 2010 Registration Form.  Any questions, please e-mail ClubCarnival2010@gmail.com. NOTE: Only the first 135 student organizations will be guaranteed a space, so be sure to register early!

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund: Scholarships for Female Students from Developing Countries

The World Bank Group Family Network announces the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) which provides financial assistance to women from developing countries during their studies in the United States or Canada.  The MMMF annually awards about six to ten grants of approximately $12,000 each.  Visit their website at www.mmmf-grants.org  for eligibility requirements and application procedures.  Applications will be accepted from Wednesday, November 4th to Thursday, February 18th.
