Employment Financial Aid and Scholarships

F-1 STUDENTS

A. On-campus work
  1. Up to 20 hours/week during the regular semester, 40 hours/week during the breaks.  May not work beyond degree completion date and must be in status.
  2. May not interfere with full-time study.
  3. Eligible for hourly jobs and research/teaching assistantships.

B. Off-campus work
  1. Optional Practical Training (OPT) –  Employment authorization benefit for F-1 students to gain practical experience in their field of study by working off-campus for a total of twelve months. The 12-month OPT can be obtained while school is in session, after completion of a degree program, and during the summer. An additional 17-month OPT can be applied for by students who will complete a degree in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
  2. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) – Employment authorization benefit for F-1 students whose degree program requires completion of internship credits.

IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR OPT AND CPT:

Maintenance of F-1 status for a minimum of 1 academic year in current degree program.
 
J-1 STUDENTS
  1. Must secure permission from their J Program sponsor to engage in any employment.
  2. ASU sponsored students must see ISSO for work authorization issues.
